Teaching Philosophy
I believe that learning to play piano can change the life of a person at any age by engaging and challenging their mind, body, and creative spirit. Learning music can also be extremely rewarding when students are able to reach levels of musical achievement they never thought possible, developing self-discipline, body awareness and problem solving strategies in the process.
My first aim is to help students develop the tools they need to pursue their musical goals. No matter what genre they pursue, healthy technique and strong reading must be foundational to their study. Depending on the interests and goals of a student, lessons can then progress into other genres, whether it be Jazz, Pop, more advanced and diverse Classical repertoire, or any combination of the above.
As a pedagogue, I believe that flexibility in my teaching approach and genuine care for the student are necessary for a successful learning experience. Every student is a unique individual, with their own strengths, weaknesses, and personality traits, and therefore may require different explanations, approaches, and methods in order to achieve their musical goals. Because of all these variables, I strive to be flexible and compassionate in my teaching method, working to meet students where they are and help them progress as far as they are willing to go. Part of this approach entails being mindful of student wellbeing, spending time addressing physical issues at the piano, and tackling psychological difficulties that impede success in practicing and performing.
Overall, in teaching students the art of music making at the piano, my goal is to foster a deep love of music in each student while providing them the tools to achieve their own artistic goals. It is essential that my students see the mystery and magic in music so that they will be motivated and inspired to persevere through challenges, not only in music but in any area of life.
